🔺The area is difficult to navigate, with no footpaths available.
🔺It is a former US military training site, with possible hidden mines.
🔺Gas pollution and wildfires caused by the eruption are present.
🔺Parking on roads near the eruption site is prohibited.

ℹ️ Important Updates:

The eruption is ongoing northeast of Grindavík. The town, surrounding areas, and nearby roads are closed. Please respect the closures and avoid the area.

Grindavíkurvegur (43) is closed to general traffic due to the eruption but open to Blue Lagoon guests with valid bookings. The exit ramp to Straumsvík is closed for westbound traffic from Keflavík. Detour via Krýsuvíkurvegur (42). Closures will last for several weeks.

This marks the ninth eruption in the area in the last three years. The most intense activity is now observed in the northern part of the eruption site, further north than previous occurrences.

As we witness the power of nature unfolding, a significant glacial outburst from Mýrdalsjökull has led to the temporary closure of Highway 1 near Skálm. This phenomenon, known as a jökulhlaup, occurs when water trapped by glacier ice suddenly releases, causing dramatic floods and landscape changes.

👀 Why does this happen?
Glacial outbursts can be triggered by geothermal heat under the glacier, especially in volcanic areas like currently under the glacier Mýrdalsjökull. The rapid melting creates vast volumes of water that, once unleashed, can reshape landscapes overnight. This can also happen during an eruption under glaciers, as we saw during the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010. Thankfully there is no indication of an eruption at Katla this time.

We have not used water to cool down lava flows since 1973 at Heymaey and we've learned immensely from constructing protective barriers to redirect lava flow, this experience has been invaluable. Do you want to experience the latest eruption and witness the magical black lava? The area around the current eruption site and the town of Grindavík is closed to visitors. We kindly ask everyone to respect the closures.
On the positive side, the Fagradalsfjall (2022-2023 eruption site) is now open for hiking. Take road 427 to access the area. The nearest lava files are only a few hundred meters from the road but for better visibility a hike to one of the hill tops is recommended.

It looks like no mayor infrastructure is in an imminent threat. The eruption can clearly been seen from Reykjavík and the red illuminating sky can be seen from Lava Centre in Hvolsvöllur. 📅Between 1975 and 1984, Iceland experienced the Kröflueldar, a series of nine eruptions at Krafla in the North East of Iceland. These events have become key reference points in understanding volcanic activities in the Reykjanes events.

🔬🌍 Observing the current eruption at Sundhnúkagígar, we find notable similarities with Kröflueldar. Mainly in the geology and the magma intrusion and the infrastructure surrounding the eruptions. At Krafla there was a new geothermal plant, and we have the Svartsengi geothermal plant close to the current eruption. Today, both areas have blue geothermal lagoons as well.

📊 The Kröflueldar eruptions were crucial for advancing our knowledge of volcanology. Their fissure eruptions, lava flows, and seismic activity patterns now serve as valuable data points when analyzing and comparing with current volcanic events like Sundhnúkagígar. Thankfully, the recent events are much smaller than the gigantic Holuhraun in 2015.

⚠️Updated Information on the Reykjanes Peninsula Eruption

The ongoing volcanic eruption that commenced at 22:17 on December 18th on the Reykjanes Peninsula remains a subject of close observation. Initiated along a dyke intrusion in November, the early stages of the eruption were marked by significant lava discharge, particularly at the northern end of the fissure.

The fissure, located approximately 3 km (2 mi) from Grindavík, is even closer to the Svartsengi geothermal power plant and the Blue Lagoon. Fortunately, The current lava flow is moving northward, away from these key areas, which is central to evaluating the potential impact on these facilities and the surrounding community.

Since the early hours of December 19th, there has been a reduction in seismic activity at the eruption site. This decrease, coupled with observations of the fissure's behavior, suggests a diminishing intensity of the eruption since it began.

Despite the lava flowing away from critical infrastructure, the situation remains serious due to the fissure's proximity to Grindavík, the Svartsengi geothermal power plant, and the Blue Lagoon. Access to the area is restricted for safety, and roads leading to the eruption site are closed to support ongoing scientific assessments.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office monitors the situation closely in coordination with civil protection and response teams. A scientific meeting is planned to analyze the latest developments and update response strategies.
